Turning Points: The Left after the EU Election
The 2024 European Elections (June 6-9) marked a crucial joint in the continent’s political landscape. As Europe navigates economic recovery and global challenges, we gathered in our Manhattan office on June 14 to explore the results and understand the complexities and possibilities shaping the future of the European Union and the European Left.
Our speakers, Daphne Weber, Member of the Federal Board of Die Linke (Germany), and Natassa Romanou, EU Parliament candidate from the New Left party (Greece), shared their insights about the performance of left-wing parties and the worrisome rise of the far right.
The event was hosted by our director, Stefan Liebich.

The problem is not economic. It's government policy, specifically spending on things government has no business spending money on and now the bills are due. All the rest of the noise is a smoke screen: Capitalism is bad, America is so divided, Guns are the problem, and so on. So why is government the problem? Because they need more money to service our ever growing debt (standing well over 34T). Because of that they need more inflation and higher taxes than ever to cover the interest on existing debt. More tax grabs are coming and much more inflation. This cycle will continue until the government is held responsible for their reckless behavior. For most of the past 75 years government spending as a % of GDP has ranged between 40% and 60%. Then Obama showed up and spending went to 95-100+% during his tenure and since he left it's never been below 100% and is now in the 120-130% range. No administration (not even our congress people) have the political will to correct this behavior because it means stopping to pay for bailouts, entitlement programs, our voluminous and never ending proxy wars (sometimes even outright wars), our police state (HHS and TFA)...and the list goes on and on. Government needs to do what they were always instituted for and really not much more. That is education, infrastructure, border security, and protection from foreign invasions. Instead government has embedded itself into every single industry and knows how to do nothing but grow itself and grow its spending. If left unchecked, they will ruin this country. None of these issues has anything to do with capitalism, it's our elected (and more so our unelected) government officials acting like our money is theirs to do what they want with it.

You realise this is part of the communist manifesto and there’s many books about it. In order to achieve what you want to achieve you’d have to take it from people who wouldn’t give it to you. Also, climate changes is not nearly as big as people think it is. Climate change has happened and we can’t reduce it as stand. If we implemented the completely green system in America and the western world. Now we could buy back the planet at the rate of five years for every 10,000 if China and India would get involved that would be two years out of every 10,000 for the full life cycle of the planet. Global leaders knew about this in the 1970s.

Promiting degrowth on social networks, writing it's content on expensive gadgets is nonesene. It should only be etched in stone or carved in a tree bark - THAT would make it authentic.

Marx and Marxists keep running into one central problem. That is, how to produce and reproduce the system. And they always have to turn the colonized world for the answer. Could it be that colonialism is the central contradiction and not the capital relation as Marx defines it? White leftists theorize and theorize endlessly, engaging in all types of contortions in order to avoid this conclusion. Marx had to admit that colonialism (primitive accumulation) was the alpha of his capitalist system. And Marxists also have to admit that it is the Omega of his capitalist system (imperialism). They're, if colonialism is the alpha and omega of capitalism, then the true mode of production is colonialism or the colonial mode of production. I define the colonial mode of production as: a violent process by which money is transformed into capital by converting coordinations of peoples into total commodities.

I carry so much inherited privilege being a white male, so it’s been a very difficult but rewarding road and there’s so much ground to cover.
